Henry Ford was born 1863 July 30 on a very flourishing farm located in Springswell, Michigan. Henry had 2 brothers, William and Robert as well as 2 sisters namely Margaret and Jane.
Henry established Ford Motor Company and also became renown for his assembly line production methods. Although he did not invent the assembly line nor did he invent the motor car but he honed it to perfection and as a standard. People are referring to his production methods in conjunction with his high wages and low consumer prices as "Fordism". Henry Ford became one of the most notable and wealthiest individuals on planet-earth.
In 1873 Henry Ford saws his first machine. A non-moving steam engine used for threshing or to throttle a mill. Fred Reden the operator has put this machine on wheels and equipped it with a drive chain. For the next year Fred taught Henry to operate this machine. Henry Ford realizes at this moment that engineering is a natural part of him.
Henry got a watch from his father in his early days and with his engineering abilities he was able to disassemble timepieces and put it back together.
1876 was a very hard year for Henry as his mother passed away. Nothing else kept him on the farm except his mother therefore Henry shortly after left for a nearby town in 1879. Not even his father's bribe of 40 acres could prevent Henry from leaving their farm.
In Detroit Henry started to work as a learner machinist for a company, James F. Flower & Bros. Later on he would be working for Detroit Dry Dock Co but in 1882 Henry decided to move back to his family farm in Dearborn. Back on the farm Henry become very skilled with the functioning of the Westinghouse steam engine and as a result Westinghouse contracted Henry to service their steam engines.
In 1888 Henry met Clara Bryant. They felt in love and married soon after. One child originated from this marriage namely Edsel Bryant Ford (1893-1943).
Edison Illuminating Company hired Henry in 1891 and after 2 years of duty Henry was promoted to Chief Engineer. This left Henry in a very favorable position as he had now enough time and also enough money to continue his home experiments on gasoline engines.
In 1896 Henry's experiments delivered his very first moving vehicle. It was known as the Quadricycle. Henry had cerebrated many ways to better this Quadricycle and approached Edison Illuminating to form Detroit Automobile Company 1899. Their financing would come from investors but Detroit Automobile Company failed quite soon due to Henry's urge to always tries and better instead of committing sales.
Henry Ford continues to race his automobiles against known manufacturers in an attempt to show-off his master-pieces. He established Ford Motor Company during his racing efforts. In 1901 the 10th October Henry raced against the favorite, Alexander Winston and successfully beat him.
In 1903 Henry Ford recruited 11 (some say 12) investors and totaled an amount of $28 000.00. They incorporated the Ford Motor Company. On Lake St. Clair Henry set up a new land speed record over 1 mile with a time of 39.4 seconds. The race driver, Barney Oldfield, named this the Ford 999. Barney familiarize the Ford brand by driving it through the entire Country.
In 1914, a year that will never forget Henry Ford. Henry doubled his employer's wages to increase it to $5 per working day and he even shaved of a hour per working day. Thus paying workers double the standard rate for less hours. This was clever strategy by Henry Ford. Henry had announced that it was one of the biggest cost cutting decisions ever made in the company. This boosted the workers moral and absenteeism decreased which result in higher production output and also saving allot of money to train temporary replacement-workers.
The Model T Ford was produced by 1908 and by 1913 the Model T was omnipresent on the roads of America. The importance of racing from a promotion point of view decreased as by 1918 half of all the cars in America where Fords. During 1913 Henry Ford introduced the moving assembly line which would later become a manufacturing standard. Although this was not a sole effort from Henry but rather from Henry and his king-pin employees.
Henry Ford, hardheaded, protected and promoted the design of the Model T Ford well after it's popularity melted tremendously. Ford sold 15,000,000.00 automobiles up to 1927. From the 1920's onwards, sales of the Model T started to go down as opposition rises with more features and also with financing plans available.
In 1918 Henry Ford where not successful in his race for senate where after he handed over his responsibilities to his son, Edsel Ford. Henry Ford still had final decision and authority and which he actually used in some cases.
The Model T's drooping sales in 1926 convinced Henry Ford to work on a new model. His son Edsel has been nagging for sometime as well. The Model A was designed and great care was taken in the designing of the chassis, engine and other mechanics. Edsel took care of the body design. By December 1927 the new Ford Model A was ready and regarded as a great success. Production lasted until 1931 and more than 4,000,000.00 units were produced. Ford Motor Company took-up a new approach by releasing a new model on an annual basis.
Ford Motor Company's presidency was left with an emptiness after Edsel Ford died in 1943 May. Henry Ford was favoring his associate Harry Bennett to fill this vacancy but Eleanor, Edsel Ford's widow, strongly believed that their son, Henry Ford II, should be the perfect candidate. At age 79, Henry Ford decided to resolve this problem by taking over the presidency personally, again. Henry Ford II was later excused from the Navy to fulfill his duties as a vice president for Ford Motor Company. Bennett also managed to get a seat on the board of members and was more involved with labor - and public relations.
The company faced 2 difficult years from 1944 to 1945. With losses amounting to $10 million (estimated) a month United States president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, provided some federal support to enable Ford to uphold production during the war times. Henry Ford, aged 81, began to show signs of senility. His wife and daugter-in-law push for grandson, Henry Ford II, to substitute the old man. After some pressure from his wife and daugther-in-law Henry Ford II took over as president of Ford Motor Company.
Henry Ford who had already suffered a stroke in 1938 sadly passed away at age 83 on his estate, Dearborn where after he was buried in the Ford Cemetery located in Detroit.
