Ferrari
Ferrari's founder

Enzo Ferrari, born 18 February 1898 in a small Italian town near Modena, visited his first race with his dad when he was 10 years old. His parents had a metal foundry that produces railroad parts and components. Their family had the first car in the town where they stayed.

Ferrari served as a mule skinner during World War I. He suffered a great loss with the deaths of his father and brother (Dino) due to influenza in 1916. When leaving the army Ferrari founded that their factory has closed down and he applied for a job with Fiat car manufacturer. His application failed but Ferrari then founded a job with a small company CMN (Costruzioni Maccaniche Nazionali).

In 1919 Ferrari took up racing but did not have tremendous success for a start. Only from 1920, after he left CMN for Alfa Romeo did he achieved some racing success. In Ravenna, 1923, Ferrari acquired the prancing horse. The prancing horse was the emblem used by a World War I fighter pilot for his aircraft. The, then passed away, pilot's mother gave Ferrari this prancing horse under the impression the it would bring him good luck. It wasn't until 1932 that the prancing horse makes its debut on the first Ferrari sports car.

After winning the Coppa Acerba in 1924 at Pescara Alfa offered him more reputable racing competition although Ferrari declined these offers. For the next 3 years Ferrari didn't look like racing and his career as a race driver seemed to be near the end.

In 1929 Ferrari formed Scuderia Ferrari, the team that would from then represent Alfa on the race tracks. Alfa withdrew all support in 1933 as a result of financial constraints. The Scuderia team where build to nearly 40 greatly skilled drivers who unfortunately did not perform so well. Some exception where to be made for example, the 1935 race in Germany by Nuvolari. These times where mostly remembered for Audi (Auto Union then) and Mercedes who dominated the race tracks.

Alfa regain full control over their racing efforts in 1937. Enzo Ferrari was then demoted to Director of Sports and worked under Alfa's Director of Engineering. As a result of this Ferrari resigned from Alfa to build on his dreams.
For the following four years, until 1940, Ferrari was bound by a contractual agreement between him and Afla which restrained him from designing or racing.

Enzo Ferrari founded Auto-Avio Costruzioni. This company supplied racing components to racing teams and also produced war material. In 1940 Ferrari enrolled 2 cars for the Mille Miglia (Thousand Miles). These cars where driven by Lothario Rangoni and Alberto Ascari.

World War II bombings impelled Ferrari to left their Modena factory for Maranello. Only seven years later, in 1947, did Enzo Ferrari started to brand his cars as "Ferrari". The 1947 Ferrari S.p.A where the first to share his family name.

In 1948 Ferrari managed their first triumph in Lago di Garda. Since the introduction of the Formula 1 grand prix in 1950 did Ferrari take part. Their first victory in 1951 at the British Grand Prix marked the beginning of Ferrari's hold on this tournament.

The unforgettable 1953 Formula 1 grand prix , where Formula 2 cars were raced, delivered another victorious day for Ferrari's racing calendar. Ferrari needed to finance there racing efforts by producing production cars although production cars were never the primary focus of Enzo Ferrari. He was ultimately intrigued by racing and also to design and build such racing cars.

During the 1950-1960 Ferrari took part in several races especially the Le-Mans where most of their victories originated from. In this time Formula 1 was secondary to Le-Mans for Ferrari although they had a couple of great performances by Juan-Manuel Fangio (1956), Mike Hawthorn (1958), Phil Hill (1961) and John Surtees (1964).

A lack of interest in Ferrari sports cars and financial complications left Ferrari with no other choice than selling shares. In 1965 Fiat purchased a small stake in Ferrari which they later, in 1969, increased to 50% and then again later, in 1988, increased to 90%.

After Enzo, the Managing Directory of Ferrari, left the office in 1971 he still had a great impact on Ferrari. The take-over of Fiat took some time to get digested and it wasn't until 1975 that Ferrari had any victory, thanks to Niki Lauda. Despite of Jody Scheckter's Grand Prix won in 1979, Ferrari struggled and did not perform well.

1982 looked like a very promising year for Ferrari and with a strong car like the 126C and more than capable drivers like Gilles and Didier, Ferrari couldn't get any victory. Gilles Villeneuve, a tremendous skilled driver, died in the 126C during May month. His teammate, Didier Pironi's career has been cut short due the an accident on Hockenheim in August the same year. What a deplorable year for Ferrari.

In 1988 Enzo Ferrari passed away at an age of 90 years. The time that the Mclaren Honda team started to take control of Formula 1 Grand Prix . From 1994-2004 Michael Schumacher drove Ferrari to several Formula 1 victories and Ferrari's dominance begins.
